Commentary - If the top three films at this point are Moneyball, The Artist, and The Descendants, then surely Michel Hazanavicius, Bennett Miller, and Alexander Payne are sure to be in contention for the director's race. And since War Horse has finally hit the circuit, it seems as if the heartstrings of the Academy will be pulled by Steven Spielberg once again. It is that last slot at this moment that is a little tricky. Woody Allen has a sure-fire hit with Midnight in Paris, but his refusal to campaign may make him get lost in the shuffle. Terrence Malick will have a lot of support but in this stacked category, I don't think he can make the cut. Martin Scorsese has zoomed up the rankings with Hugo being so popular, and I think he is a serious threat. David Fincher, Jason Reitman, and George Clooney all need boosts for their films. So I am going with Stephen Daldry, as he has yet to not be nominated. It is hard to argue with that track record.
