Best of the Academy Awards Winners: Best Visual Effects, Sound Mixing, and Sound Editing

Best Visual Effects
Winner - (TIE) Avatar and Star Wars
Runners Up - The Empire Strikes Back, 2001: A Space Odyssey
Commentary - So you might as well prepare yourself that in some categories I may cop out, because it is sometimes just so hard to choose just one. In this category, I went with two different generations.  By today's visual effects standards, no film has surpassed the stunning visuals of Avatar. But Avatar can almost entirely trace its roots back to 1977, when Star Wars hit the screen. For its time, it was a visual feat, the film that utilized new technology, and continued to explore the possibilities of film.

Best Sound Mixing
Winner - Lawrence of Arabia
Runners Up - The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark
Commentary - Lawrence is one of the most incredible film masterpieces of all time, and deserves some sort of recogntion. In the 1960's, the bold scale of the film was a technical feat. Being able to intrically coordinate the dialogue with the sounds of the desert made Lawrence of Arabia a treat for the ears.

Best Sound Editing
Winner  - Raiders of the Lost Ark
Runners Up  -E.T., Star Wars, and The Dark Knight
Commentary - Raiders of the Lost Ark is the beginning of one of the greatest film series of all times. It is a fast paced action adventure, and is stunning for both the eyes and the ears. I guarantee you that if you pop this into your surround sound you will see the intricacies of the sound, and appreciate the work of its effects editors.
