Runner Up - Vivien Leigh "Gone With the Wind", Geraldine Page "A Trip to Bountiful"
Commentary - I think that in the multitude of actresses that have grace the silver screen, there are two that stand out as the greatest of all time. For almost fifty years, the reigning queen was Katharine Hepburn, who was in fine form in The Lion in the Winter, her best performance of her four Oscar wins. In the aftermath of Hepburn's death, the actress who took the throne was of course the marvelous Meryl Streep. Her raw and stunning performance in Sophie's Choice showed the world exactly how great Meryl Streep was.
So are the winners chosen judging by their careers or on the merit of the performance which won them the Oscar per se?
