British Independent Film Award Nominees

I think two films in particular received a boost from these nominees. Now a disclamier must be put out that like the Indie Spirits and American critics' groups awards, these do not correlate or cross over with the BAFTA nominees. But they keep films in the conversation, and show the popularity and strength of films as a whole. So two films show some strength that could carry them to BAFTA and maybe Oscar recognition. The first is in the foreign category with the nomination of Beasts of the Southern Wild. If it plays well in the UK, maybe it will have some broader support than many, including myself, thinks it does at the moment. The other is the big British hit of the year, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. It's crossover into the mainstream movie markets did not stop the independent film industry from honoring it, and it also boosts its awards haul going into the onslaught of the BAFTA/Oscar season. If it can garner enough support from the British members within the Academy (along with the elderly voters of all nationalities who probably loved it), it could make a surprising impact and score a few Oscar, and definitely BAFTA, nominations.
