Director's Guild of America (DGA) Nomination Predictions

Predictions
Ben Affleck "Argo"
Tom Hooper "Les Miserables"
Ang Lee "Life of Pi"
Steven Spielberg "Lincoln"
Kathryn Bigelow "Zero Dark Thirty"

Other Contenders - Tom Hooper "Les Miserables", David O. Russell "Silver Linings Playbook", Michael Haneke "Amour", Paul Thomas Anderson "The Master"

Commentary - In the end, the directing race will come down to Affleck, Bigelow, and Spielberg, all of whom are locks for nominations for both the DGA tomorrow and the Oscars on Thursday, but the last two slots are proving very tricky as a of late, as there are six directors with a real shot. I don't think that the more populist DGA will nominate PTA or Haneke, although both could find support in the smaller, more high-minded Director's branch. As could the ever-popular Quentin Tarantino, who really could surprise tomorrow, although I will play it safe and say for the moment that he misses the cut. David O. Russell managed support from the DGA in 2010, but I get the sense that he is not the most popular guy, especially with so many popular names ahead of him. That being said, the love of the film could be enough. Instead, I am going with first, Ang Lee. While Life of Pi's campaigning has been dead as of late, I think that fellow directors will recognize the difficulty and craft that it took to create the film. In the final slot, I am going with Les Mis. While the film is getting mixed reviews, it definitely has a passionate fan base, and Hooper still probably has fans across the wide swath of the DGA, with his work in both films and television.
