The Academy has narrowed down the list of Visual Effects contenders to ten finalists. Of course Gravity, The Hobbit, and many of the big summer blockbusters made the cut. I am surprised that The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was left off, probably showing its lack of support within the Academy. Also missing are Man of Steel, The Great Gatsby, and Ender's Game.

No Man of Steel here is pretty shocking since Superman Returns was nominated and the effects in Man of Steel were pretty damn excellent. Oh well. I will say that Elysium or Star Trek are the best contenders for Man of Steel's vacant spot, but I think that it could be someone else entirely.
