American Film Institution (AFI) Top Ten Films and Television Shows

You could have fooled me when you said this was the AFI Top Ten list, because it could just as easily be the nominees for Best Picture come nomination morning in January. Captain Phillips gets a much needed notice, as it has surprisingly been absent from the critical nominations/winners so far, and the inclusions of Inside Llewyn Davis and Fruitvale Station, two indie films that are fighting in a competitive category. Also, while the industry apparently loves Saving Mr. Banks, the buzz has been muted since its festival premeires, and its UK box office has been incredibly weak. So once again, it needed a mention, a boost of some sort, and fast, and it just got it. This week though, the heavy-hitters start with SAG on Wednesday, and Globes on Thursday, which will help sort the contenders from the pretenders.

Nice mentions for newer programs The Americans, House of Cards, Masters of Sex, and Orange is the New Black. Also really happy to see Scandal (my guilty pleasure), The Good Wife (which is better than ever), and Veep (because there is not enough comedy represented here).
