When I saw American Hustle this afternoon, I was simply floored. I expect the film will do well with the industry due to the apparent entertainment value, and the talent involved. But the mixed reactions that came from bloggers and critics upon seeing the film seemed to me would rule it out of the critics awards. Rumor has it that there were two strong contingencies between American Hustle and 12 Years a Slave (as evidenced by the picture/director split). I still think that 12 Years will do well at other groups, and I would definitely be surprised if all of the sudden American Hustle starting sweeping. This could easily have just been this random faction at NYFCC, and then it disappears until the guilds, a big possibility. Either way, the NYFCC has already thrown some interesting things to chew over, as other groups start to announce soon. On the acting side, all four winners look to be sure-fire nominees at this point, but the real tests will be SAG, BAFTA, and the Globes as to who will come out on top. I will say this for the NYFCC. They have worked so damn hard to jump to the head of the line, and their picks this year only confirm what I have thought for the last several years (since they made the jump), and that is that they don't care who wins, and they don't necessarily vote for their favorites, but what they think will have an influence on the later season. It will be interesting to see what happens in the years to come. For now check out the winners below:
