Directors Guild of America (DGA) Nominees

Well, I was right in thinking that Scorsese would get in, along with the other four I had actually predicted. This is a big boost for Wolf of Wall Street and for another director nod for Scorsese. At the Academy he could be replaced by Jonze or Payne or the Coens (although another big miss for Inside Llewyn Davis, who now only has the craft guilds to try to rely on), but with Martin Scorsese on the ballot it is easy to see this translating to Oscar. This also is a nice boost to Captain Phillips, despite its success on the circuit so far, there are still those (for some reason), that doubt it as a top contender. I think that Best Picture is between Gravity, 12 Years, and American Hustle, but Captain Phillips is clearly that fourth place, and could score in other categories (like editing for example), even if it doesn't get the top prizes. The last big piece to the puzzle for the top categories is BAFTA which announces early in the morning (like 2 here on the Eastern Coast). This could really boost some outside contenders, or inflict a wound on some previously guaranteed nominees. I will post them when I get up before work, and then tomorrow night, I will start making some Oscar predictions, and will update as the craft guilds have their say.

Best Director
Alfonso Cuaron "Gravity"
Paul Greengrass "Captain Phillips"
Steve McQueen "12 Years a Slave"
David O. Russell "American Hustle"
Martin Scorsese "The Wolf of Wall Street"
