2014 Emmy Predictions: Best Directing in a Drama Series

Will Win - Cary Joji Fukunaga "True Detective - Who Goes There"

Should Win - Cary Joji Fukunaga "True Detective - Who Goes There"

Could Win - Vince Gilligan "Breaking Bad - Felina" or Neil Marshall "Game of Thrones - The Watchers on the Wall" or Tim Van Patten "Boardwalk Empire - Farewell Daddy Blues"

Commentary - When Breaking Bad and AMC did not submit Ozymandias for this category (which probably would have been a slam dunk), the next best one that popped into my mind was the work of Cary Fukunaga, a genuine movie director (Jane Eyre, Sin Nombre) who dropped by HBO and directed all of the episodes of the first season of True Detective. One of the best sequences on television this year was the last half or so of Who Goes There. It was thrilling, ridiculous, and absolutely brilliant. I think that the directors will respect this feat and reward him with an Emmy. Now don't count out Breaking Bad. Felina is a great episode, and it is another way to honor Vince Gilligan, the show's creator. I also think that the directors will respect The Watchers on the Wall, a well-crafted piece on Game of Thrones, but there may just be too much competition ahead of it. And finally, we should always watch out for Tim Van Patten. He is beloved by television directors, and has already had a surprise win in this category in before. He could catch everyone off guard again.
