The Oscar Narrative: Final Oscar Predictions - Visual Effects, Makeup and Hairstyling, and The Shorts

Best Makeup and Hair Styling
Will Win - Mad Max: Fury Road
Could Win - The Revenant
Should Win - Mad Max: Fury Road
Commentary - The Revenant could benefit from the grit and grime, but I would be jaw-dropped if anything other than Mad Max: Fury Road won here. The makeup was front and center, it was bold and brilliant, and as we know, usually the most wins. And Mad Max certainly has the most makeup of the bunch.

Best Visual Effects
Will Win - Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Could Win - The Revenant, The Martian, or Mad Max: Fury Road
Should Win - Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Commentary - I don't think that Oscar voters are going to let Star Wars go away empty handed. BAFTA and the VES went for Star Wars in this category, and I think that Academy voters will follow suit, even over their Best Picture favorites The Revenant and Mad Max. Plus, I think it deserves to. Unlike the prequels, this film actually felt real. That's because the visual effects team beautifully worked special effects into built sets in a way that seamlessly blended the old and the new. I think it surprises here.

Best Animated Short
Will Win - World of Tomorrow
Could Win - Bear Story or Sanjay's Super Team
Should Win - World of Tomorrow

Best Documentary Short
Will Win -  Claude Lanzmann: Spectres of the Shoah
Could Win - Body Team 12 or Chau, Beyond the Lines
Should Win - Body Team 12

Best Live Action Short
Will Win - Shok
Could Win - Ave Maria or Stutterer
Should Win - Shok
